1974 – RECARO Rallye II
In parallel with development of the new RECARO design principles by Horst Sommerlatte and preparation of the second generation of the IdealSeat, RECARO also developed a successor to the shell seat. The predecessor was intended for both touring car racing and rally use.
The new RECARO racing seat expanded the program for professional circuit racing in 1974. Furthermore, with the RECARO Rallye, the company brought to the market a model that fulfilled the requirements for rally racing even more consistently. At first, the name also represents the range of use. With the correct ergonomic shape, upholstery designed for sports and pronounced side bolsters, a safe metal shell protected drivers as they drove to victory. Another special feature on the new model: Due to a forward-tilting backrest, the occupant does not have to dispense with comfort – a novelty for rally racing at the time. Not only the design, but also the RECARO headrests, adjustable in height and tilt, offered the driver maximum safety. The strict safety regulations from the USA were surpassed significantly with the further increased impact protection; the driver was able to fully concentrate on the road. The sports and shell seats at this level were the benchmark for professional sportsmen and, at the same time, also formed the basis for all further seats in the entire program – in this respect, the experiences from professional sport benefited all car drivers.
