1965 – RECARO S-Seat

This new product from RECARO for the first time contributed a perceptibly sporty component to vehicles. Whereas seats from conventional series production had previously been constructed mainly from metal springs and horsehair padding, RECARO employed modern foam upholstery to absorb jolts from the road. The new sports seat also offered pronounced side bolsters, a feature that was previously reserved for racing seats, to improve occupant support for everyone. Porsche bestowed high honor on the first RECARO: For the new 911 model as well, the RECARO seat was available from the factory as an optional extra or as standard equipment for all drivers wishing to combine sportiness with comfort. With this, the revolutionary new product became eligible for all road-going sports cars. Thanks to a suitable bracket as an adapter for installation in different types of vehicle, the RECARO Sport Seat was also the first seat that could be installed into various cars.

The sports seat was a success for RECARO right from the start. Hardly surprising, since it embodied – like its successors – the optimum combination of function, ergonomics and esthetics, which is called "Ingenious Design" at RECARO. The DNA of this sports seat, expanded over time by quality, safety and lightweight design principles, is still apparent in every RECARO seat today.

A few years after the market launch, the RECARO sports seat was renamed "IdealSeat," in order to prevent the misunderstanding that the seat was exclusively intended for sporty drivers. Customers should learn from the new name that they can sit ideally, i.e. not be able to sit any better in a car than that. The company's motto at the time was appropriate for this: "Sitting better means driving better."
